Apologies if this has already been said, but most source packages adhere to the following installation procedure. 1. cd to the directory where you have unpacked the source 2. type ./configure this runs the configure script which does a huge bunch of checks to try to make sure the compile will be successful. It should tell you for example if any libraries are missing. It is usually possible to pass arguments to configure to tell it where you want files to be put. configure creates (amongst other things) a makefile which tells the compiler how to build the programme from the source. 3. type ./make this compiles the programme and should result in an exectuable 4 type ./make install this installs the executable and any other necessary files in predetermined directories. In which case the common practice is to set a prefix in the configure command to compile it where you want. ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mynewprog make su - make install This will put your compiled program in /usr/local/mynewprog. Kernel 2.6 again

I now have kernel 2.6.3 source from Debian Testing/Sarge and am still having some problems. The ohci-hcd module is not being loaded automatically and in consequence my mouse doesn't work until the module is loaded with Modprobe. Can anyone tell me what I need to put into /etc/modprobe.d or /etc/modprobe.conf to make the loading automatic? Norwich evening meeting: 11th March 2004

The monthly Norwich 'second thursday' evening social meet will take place next week, 11th March from 8 pm in the 'City Gate' pub, Dereham Road. Full address, photo, link to map etc here: http://www.norwichpubs.info/norwichpubs/pubpages/citygate.htm If you have not attended one of these meets before, they are informal and unstructured and general chat covers many topics as well as the obvious linux-related stuff. There may or may not be a penguin on the table :-) === directions etc === The City Gate pub is just off the inner ring road at the junction of Grapes Hill and Barn Road. Dereham Road is the A1074 - take the Costessey junction on the A47 if coming from west of Norwich. Otherwise, when going clockwise around the inner ring road, Dereham road is the left turn at the traffic lights at the bottom of Grapes Hill (but see parking info below). There is a very large Cane Furniture shop on the corner and this is probably the best landmark from either direction. The pub, which has a large glass frontage (see link to picture above), is next to the cane furniture shop. There is ample parking nearby, including possible free parking on the forecourt of a wine warehouse next to the pub or on side roads off Dereham Road. There is also Pay-and-Display parking ( £1.40 for the evening) on the other side of the ring road off St Swithin's road. Coming down Grapes Hill turn right at the lights (St Benedict's Street) and then left into the entrance to the car park which is behind Toys-R-Us. Syd

Mandrake 9.2 ADSL Network

Thanks for all your replies to "Groupware for the Home". I did read them but was switching over to ADSL (lucky me) at the time and the 'switch over' really hasn't finished yet as you'll understand from my plight below! I have gone over to ADSL with Pipex. The Speedtouch 330 USB modem they sent was a nightmare and I tried and tried to get it to work with Linux but to no avail (tried all the drivers and even started installing new distro's!!). Finally I had enough and purchased a modem router - ethernet (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X…). I had it up and running in 10 minutes and it is a very good, cheap, little gizmo. However now I am using Mandrake 9.2 and I am having connection problems. The modem holds the connection but Mandrake seems to lose the connection to the modem and in order to get things running again I have to enter the command /etc/init.d/network restart - as root. So much so that this command is now a shortcut on my desktop. Can anyone help here please? I went from Suse 8.2 to Fedora to Suse 9.0 to Slackware 9.0 to Mandrake 9.2 over a four day period and I don't think I can stand another re-install. In the customer reviews for the product link above it mentions a firmware upgrade - done it - no difference. I don't think there's any point in e-mailing Pipex as the modem keeps the connection. Could this be a problem with DrakFirewall?? Help please. Rgds, Martin
