Hi :) Apparently a copy "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" changed hands yesterday at the City Gate meeting. BJ has it now, I'm told, but we have two copies which are both out so I don't know who it was that returned it. It was either David Crease or John Atkinson. Can someone let me know who it was please? /Kirsten (librarian of sorts)

I picked up a copy of tvtime 0.9.12 and installed it and I get pictures. Unfortunately, I get vertically compressed images with a large green patch underneath. I've read the documentation over and over and I've tried experimenting with all sorts of settings, to no avail. Strangely, though, the captured images are the correct aspect ratio, but still with a large area of green under. Presumably it works better than that with your telly pictures? > I was thinking about getting a QX3 at some point, but then I found out that the > zoom wasn't optical or something like that which put me off but if you can get From what I can tell, the magnification (x10, x60, x200) is all done optically. For the price, it seems not too bad. I found an addition prog 'cpia-control' (uses Python) which is useful for setting the camera's parameters and also for controlling the object lamps. OFFTOPIC: I need a big favor, for a big download

Hey I really need a favour, can anyone in the norwich area do a big download for me (it's counter strike 1.6 WITHOUT steam!). I know this is off topic, but I need it for a big lan that is happening at Geldeston village hall (near beccles, come of you can make next weekend email me for more details). http://www.dijkstra.biz/stuff/programma/lan/cs-lan-v7/cs16full-v7.exe I would really appreciate it if someone could burn this to disc for me! Implementing security services on specialized security hardware is not a cost-effective solution. The Trusted Computing Group have developed a new industry specification which adds a Trusted Computing Base to the general purpose PC with a fraction of the cost of secure hardware. debian and kernels and the net

I installed woody last week, and have just gotten round to compiling the 2.4.22 kernel. All was well until I tried to access the net. I can connect OK (using wvdial) but I can't get my mail and moz just times out when trying to load pages. I've tried pinging IP addresses with no luck so It's not my nameservers being wrong or anything. I'm guessing that something is stopping the packets from leaving my 'puter. The lack of blinking lights on my modem would suggest ths, anyhow. the config I used to compile the kernel is the one I have used in all my boxes in the past with no problems (including ones with kernel 2.4.22). I used the vanilla kernel source (ie, taken from the PC format discs rather than apt-getting the source), but I doubt that would make a difference?? And even with my shiny new book, 'google hacks' I still can't anything even remotely related ;) help...please...someone. TIA, BenE

QX3 microscope

Has anyone here ever used the Intel QX3 microscope (the blue plastic one) on Linux? If so, what application is needed to view the pictures, apart from the kernel cpia drivers? And is the QX3 worth having?? Cheers, Gerald.

Mouse problems - how to specify a PS/2 mouse?

I had a disaster yesterday with my Win2k system, as a consequence I needed to get my Linux system displaying its X desktop directly as opposed to using the Win2k system's X server (cygwin). I had to run xf86config as I'd never set up X on the system before, it actually went quite smoothly without any serious problems and I had my xfce desktop up and running very easily - apart from a non-working mouse. My problem then was that I didn't know what the entries in the XF86Config file were for different mouse types. The HOWTOs tell you which lines to change for different types of mice etc. but they don't tell you what are the possible valid entries. Where can one find this information? I simply couldn't get a PS/2 mouse set up to work and ended up finding a serial mouse and using that. Does one need to change the link from /dev/mouse to /dev/ttyS0 if using a PS/2 mouse? I worked out that the Protocol setting needed to be PS/2 but still couldn't get it working. -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)
