How to add a DVD writer?

If I want to install a DVD writer onto an existing Slackware 9.1 system what do I need to do to get it to work? Are there any good HowTos? (The system already has a CD which I will be replacing with the DVD writer) -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)

Red Hat Registration & apm

Hello, can anyone help to solve 2 problems I have with red hat 9 1. I cannot register for updates. The first step (privacy statement) remains blank with the cursor showing busy. The next set of steps are filled in with the required information, but finishes with the error, problem registering user name. 2. If I use the apm command to suspend or standby, the screen shuts down then immediately turns itself back on, then the terminal window continually writes, root @ localhost root, until it is full. Then all programs do not respond,then eventually the whole screen is locked so the computer has to be turned off. Bob Jarvis. (New to Linux)

Samba quandry

Hello there I have two linux boxes running samba. Both have the same workgroup. On both machines I have user 'charles' with the same smb password. However to see each other's user shares I am asked to log in. How do I make the smb server accept the 'charles' from the remote machine as the local charles? On window shares, without domains, matching username/passwords is usually the only requirement. Cheers Charles

When switching between users you will be prompted for that user password, unless you are calling the command from root. If you are logged on to your Xwindow system as john and you open an xterm and type "su" you are effectively switching from user john to root - you should be asked for the root password here. Type it in, and if the $ sign at the prompt becomes a # sign, you are now root. The command "whoami" will also let you know which user you currently are. sudo is a program which will allow you to run certain commands as root without having to switch user - so if you install sudo and edit the config file to say that john can run such-and-such a program, you can do so as user john, by putting the command "sudo" before the main command. It can be dangerous to charge around your system as superuser :-))) so it is a useful little program to allow certain tasks as a mortal.
