Hello all. I don't know if I am a Linux newbie or not [If you can compile kernels OK are you a newbie ???] but I have been using Linux for over a year now and am very, very impressed. I try and use Linux instead of MS whenever possible. Unfortunately I have to use MS as well and I boot Win 2000, DOS and Redhat quite happily on my PC. I work as a senior tech support specialist and I also have a good grounding in electronics. Reason for joining ALUG ? Apart from living in Mileham, I think meeting some experienced users would be good as it will knock a good chunk of Microsoft out of me !!! Of course, I will be happy to contribute my limited Linux knowledge but I realise there are lots of far more experienced people then me out there ... Oh yes, and I have a real nasty problem with a Promise Fasttrak controller module that I cannot compile against the vanilla RH6.2 2.2.x kernel or the latest 2.4.x kernel release. Promise support is naff, and they only distribute the SMP module in .o format ... I can boot the box OK as Linux is on a standard IDE drive, but it bombs when insmod tries to load ft.o for the RAID drive with unresolved symbols. I can install ft.o fine on a clean install using the 'expert text dd' options, and mount drives etc. but when I recompile the kernel [I need NTFS support] I get unresolved symbols. Using the insmod -f option does not allow the module to load. I am including SCSI and RAID support in the kernel. I have also checked the symbol versioning : mv .config 000.cfg make mrproper mv 000.cfg .config make dep clean modules modules_install bzImage As I cannot get the source to this module am I doomed to having no NTFS support ? Any suggestions, comments, brickbats etc. more than welcome. Thanks.

Nah, as long as the subject line keeps up with the topic being discussed, I don't think anyone minds. Things like this where it may well come to someone having to pay a visit are probably best off here, but sometimes it's better to ask questions in uk.comp.os.linux, as more eyeballs makes shallower problems. -- MJR

Thanks Adam. The linux box is at home, but I can tell you what it says, as I made a "test" one from the samba book. [global] workgroup = jenbass encrypt passwords = yes [test] comment = for testing only please path = /export/samba/test read only = no guest ok = yes This tested ok with the testparm, and ran ok with smbclient. I live out in Burwell, BTW, even though i work in Cambridge, - a bit off the beaten track.

Morning All! Still no luck with Samba at home, so I wondered if I post up my various settings, if anyone sees anything glaringly obvious set wrong, could they give me a shout? Many thanks for your patience..Jenny. (Or are you all gritting your teeth and glaring at your screens by now and I just can't see you?) Windows TCP/IP is configured as follows (jenny 192.168.10.100): IP Address set for windows box 192.168.10.100 subnet 255.255.255.0 WINS config disabled No gateway installed DNS enabled host mossey (linuxbox name) domain jenbass.com DNS search order 192.168.10.101 (linux box IP) All 3 bindings enabled Allow binding to ATM set to NO. Netbios (greyed out) (disabled I assume) (NB: My thinking was that as the windows box is still the one dialling out to the internet at the moment, but the linux box is the one i want to eventually, and is the one with the resolv.conf file, that is why i have set it as having no gateway, but DNS enabled, perhaps arse about face a bit here?) linux box (mossey 192.168.10.101) samba version 2.0.6 can't find nmbd log? etc/hosts shows mossey.jenbass.com so domain name is same as for windows. (?) can ping one from the other happily. Can telnet linuxbox from windows. changed JENBASS to jenbass in smb.conf, no luck encrypted passwords already enabled. .

UNIX Airways Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what kind of plane they are supposed to be building. Air DOS Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again. Then they push again, jump on again, and so on ... Mac Airlines All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look neat and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, that you really don't want to know, and that everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up. Windows Air The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever. Windows NT Air Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes. Linux Air Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. You take the seat to a location of your choice and bolt it into the deck, per the instructions. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plan leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "Jesus, you had to do what with the seat? ... "

OpenProjects IRC looking for help

It seems that hogan.openprojects.net, the UK server of the network is "going away" at the end of the month. I know we have some people from various reasonably helpful places subscribed (even if some don't post) and wondered if anyone felt like running their software on a machine with network connection "as fast as possible, as well-homed as possible" in exchange for a mention in the MOTD (sign-on message). In the words of the network admin, "we won't use much bandwidth but we are increasing" -- MJR
