As ever (and this applies to everyone), it depends what you want to write about. Even so-called "lifestyle" pieces about your setup in general or what you perceive to be a niche interest are interesting and useful, because out there somewhere is someone who'll find themselves in a similar situation and they can learn from your experience. For example, I'm interested in computer-controlled/synthesized music, but I never have time to download and test Linux music software, so I'd reat articles on that. That's just an example, not a request for an article! Also on the readership front, LUG.org.uk is looking at how they can pass articles between LUGs, so there should be a bigger audience than just our 100 or so. -- MJR

Next meet ???

Hi Guy's n Ladies? I'm new to the Anglia area, just moved into Red Lodge (real sprawling metropolis!!). Been using Linux, both in comercially and private environments and was wondering when the next meet is and where? I've got a couple of Netfinity 4500's a Netfinity 5500, couple of PC300GL's all running RH6.0 -> 6.2, various cisco switches and a couple of routers to have a play with that I could bring along... Maybe it's just my email screwing up, but I didn't see the original message, so I'm assuming it was a private one. Although I've been imploring people to "reply to all", sending responses to private messages in public is still a bit taboo... ...and FWIW, I'd be quite interested to see some Netfinity kit one of these days, besides the adverts I'm always getting bombarded with. As people know, while working for the Union, I was trying to work wonders with obsolete kit (and *usually* succeeding), but I'm hoping to have decent things to play with this year (not for the Union, although TSW have just got quite a fun desktop box, eh Brett?) ;-) Anyway, let's try not to be too harsh. If you don't like something someone says, don't answer it... survival of the interesting, not flames... -- MJR

Sorry, I didn't mean it quite like that. I was just curious why someone had cisco routers at what I assumed, wrongly, was home, but it would appear they are not used for a simple home network, but more a server farm. sorry if I didn't get this across first time. Following on from this tho, It would be interesting to see this kit at the next meet. Also out of interest what is the cisco kit you have? Fair enough David, was a bit boring, but this equipment is required when you manage a server farm, monitoring around 300 machines, running various strains of web servers etc (Won't go into details this time). Just though that some people arn't lucky enough to have this sort of equipment available to have a look at or mess around with. SO be it.. When I last bumped into John on IRC (eu.openprojects.net #alug), he suggested Feb 3rd as a possible date for a meeting at Syleham (nice venue details page on new website as soon as it appears). How does that grab people? Is that a possibility, John? Another meeting is pencilled in for UEA on "UK Linux Day", 29th April, which should be a huge installfest with demos. More on that as and when I know it. Initial dayglo website at http://www.linuxday.org.uk/ and that's another one needing help. If you can help with it, get in touch with me and I'll pass the offers on. Corporate members with time (are there any?), I suspect you could probably snarf an ad slot in return. I'd like to see a meeting organised for March and, personally, I'd love to go somewhere new. Anyone able to get a venue and pull it together? (Note: people have chipped in for venues that cost money in the past...) -- MJR

Distro's, Hardware and Gaming

Having Just ordered a hardware upgrade for my aging 200mhz K2, I was thinking I might treat my self to a decent graphics card at the same time. So I have a couple of questions. Which Distro would people recommend for ease of install and maintainance, also are there any which install the bttv driver as default? Is the GeForce 2 chipset supported under linux? What are there in the way of Linux games available? Can I drive the old matrox mystique with the new Geforce at the same time in the same PC?
