Hi All, I've only just joined ALUG, so a quick intro: My name is Earl Brannigan, I work near Newmarket for a small software house and eventually convinced the boss after much effort to go Linux, Now he loves it and we've put together some nice stuff on Linux Web Servers (Not our own page yet mind). But I am now pretty proficient with apache, security etc so we'll see. I run Linux at home - Red-Hat 6-2, and have been doing pretty well with it - until 4am some nights. So here's the problem : Wanting to use my 56k Internal Hardware PCI Modem I eagerly awaited kernel-2.4, and was probably one of the first to grab it from kernel.org in the early morning of Jan 6th. I then spent some time finding and installing the necessary support stuff - especially ppp-2.4. Now having built the kernel, installed the necessary other stuff etc my ppp refuses to work - I get the dial out, the PAP works, then nothing (BTW - My machine is much faster with the new kernel, and the PCI probing etc has improved the functionality of my soundcard - it also talks to my motherboard better (VIA Apollo) and uses my Celery Processor to the max). Looking through the logs I am getting unfound modules for ppp (I also installed modutils-2.4 and ksymoops-2.4) Am I missing something? I use either kppp or rp3 to take care of the connection, which also utilize wvdial I think. Do I need to recompile these packages from source in order to utilize the new ppp libraries? Or do I have to wait for updated versions to be released. If so how do I utilize pppd without them? If anyone has any thoughts/suggestions just push em through, or if you need other info I'd be glad to supply it. Just let me know. Many Thanks. Happy Linuxing Earl

Mark - always happy to help if i can, but no experience of websites, very new to linux OS, and live a fair distance from Norwich (Cambridge). Also work full time, play in a band, and look after two young children, so pretty busy. But if you want something done, ask a busy person................let me know if i can do anything remotely, with such limited credentials. Jenny.

New ALUG Website: Call For Articles & Assistance

Hi, At long last the Great Website Renovation is done. We should be on Martyn's host and fully operation in a few days, and I think that includes email redirectors for anyone that wants them (right Martyn?). In the short term, I need your help to make the site more substantial. From the old site, we have: - Contact details page - Mailing list sign-up and archive - Meetings information for the first five - Meeting venues information (in the next day or two) This is a general call for articles on any Linux-related topic. You can provide them in a number of ways, including marked up into very simple XML (much simpler than HTML), or just by making text and graphics available to me somehow. Personally, I am particularly interested in having the following: - Meetings information for the rest (mailing list+memory, anyone?) - Articles from a new user's point of view - Reviews of some Linux Games - Pointers to new-user information but this is not a concrete list, so feel free to discuss them or suggest other ideas to the mailing list. I'm also *desperate* for more people to help with the site. Workload should be minimal and everything should be as easy as possible now (at last!), but it was some time since I asked and I don't know how situations have changes, so I'm asking again. Looking forward to your replies! -- MJR

I have a room that is 7'*7' My intention was to have a 17" monitor on my desk connected to the Geforce card, This I would use for most stuff like games etc... on the other side of the room I was going to put my old 15" monitor so I can use it for watching TV in bed. I also like the good 'ol games. I have fond memorys of chucky egg on the BBC, which I still have and will one day connect to my linux network :o), I quite like the idea of porting it to linux, but thats abit beyond my level ATM. Space invaders, Snake and hardball/breakout are all good for winding down. The other classics I quite like are Duke nukem 3d, doom trilogy, and a friend has got me into playing Rogue spear on his PC. Well, I'm quite into simpler games, so these probably won't be to everyone's taste, but I enjoy XBlast and many of the libSDL games. Not much more advanced than your original consoles, but I find them fun. I don't think I've actually any games installed right now. I must put that right. -- MJR
