Can't start Gnome-terminal with non-root user.

I finally got round to setting up another user account (other than root) on my scratch built system. Most things are working except for Gnome-terminal. It starts fine for root but crashes with a message about changes to the 2.2.x kernel and checking ptys. Given that it works fine for root I think this is a red-herring. I think this is a file permissions problem. I've scanned round the web and found a couple of hits that suggested some file permissions that need to be set. I've checked these and they are ok. Any suggestions for how I might go about tracking this down (and yes I know I could cure this by installing a 'proper' distro, but what will I learn from that? - don't answer that, it's rhetorical :o) ) ____________ BAROMETER, n. For a couple of years, there have been discussions of a possible GLLUG picnic at Bletchley Park, a genuine geek pilgrimage site - all credit to John Hearnes, who's proposed and pushed the idea in the past... I'm proposing that if you're not doing anything else next Sunday (the 18th), we get together there for the GLLUG picnic '02. Why that date? Three reasons come to mind: They're having an Airbourne Forces weekend that weekend, which means paratrooper and commando displays, and a WWII overflight on the Sunday; It's the same weekend as the Picn*x11 Linux picnic (www.linuxpicnic.org) in California - if we decide on that date quickly, we should be able to get some publicity out of that; No time like the present - the weather is pretty variable at the moment, so thats no help in picking a date, and I know people will be on holiday, but at least if we pick a date, it might actually *happen* this year! Apparently there might be engineering works which would affect the trains, but barring that, I propose those who want to take the train meet at Euston at maybe 11ish on the Sunday, and those who want to go under their own steam aim to meet us there at around 12? I've called and provisionally booked us in - I can call and cancel if no-one else can make it, or if it's a silly idea, or I can call and confirm if there's going to be 10-15 people or more there. I'd want to know by, say, Tuesday next week... We can discuss it on-list, or on my Wiki (@wiki.vmlinuz.org) - if you're a confirmed yes, add your name to the BletchleyParkInterestList there. For what it's worth, I'd say families are welcome - trying to make it *slightly* less geeky :-) For anyone who doesn't know about Bletchley Park (shame on you!) there's oodles of info at www.bletchleypark.org.uk - yes, it's a pretty crappy-looking site, but remember to hold your complaining off until we get there... Need advice for laptop install

Hello, I have a laptop with windows Home-XP (Which I find the most irritating of all the Windows OS's that I've ever used), the laptop has a 18 Gig disk drive. I want to repartition the drive, to keep the XP in a half the drive and install Linux on the other half. I'm not a Linux expert but want to use the laptop to get further Linux experience. In the past I have purchased various partition software manager's each time Microsoft changed something but having done that 3 times now I wonder if there is any alternative (My latest version was partition magic 4.0 which won't handle the new format NTFS that XP has been loaded with). Can anyone suggest any free software or any techniques for safely repartitioning the Laptop without reformating the existing XP partition? Thanks Karl Middleton

I had a sneaky peek at www.netcraft.com to see what some of my fave websites were running (look, I'm bored). Most, of course were running Linux or a *BSD. Netcraft has a survey of which http servers are being used (i.e. IIS or Apache). Does anyone know of a site that breaks down webservers by the OS??? Linux Boot Scripts

While browsing Mr.Gooch's website for devfs info. I noticed that he has developed a replacement set of boot scripts. <http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/rgooch/linux/boot-scripts/index.html> I'm currently using the SysV format scripts as I prefer it to the BSD format (mainly because the SysV seems to be better structured and organised), does anyone have any strong views on SysV vs. BSD?
