I could get the basic kernel system installed if I copied all the relevant files on to the DOS partition and installed from there. I could boot up, log in and run 'ls', etc., but obviously there wasn't anything much installed to do anything with. I ran dselect and chose what I wanted to install and it started reading from CD. It didn't get terribly far before it just locked up again with the CD and PC's HDD LEDs both permanently lit. Would I be right in thinking that the kernel must be fairly acceptable to my hardware as I could install from HD and then boot? Then again, the CD drive happily installs Slack 3.5 and Redhat 7.1, so it seems as though that works, too! I'm going round in circles, aren't I! Sorry I didn't make it yesterday, but I was trying to get as much as poss done on my website (still not finished). Good news is, I'm finally getting things to work in Linux. Unfortunately still no support for my USB cd-writer. :( possibly some support for my USB printer, but I haven't found it yet. Surrey & Disks that don't work

I made an enquiry of the list on the matter of Btinternent, this was due to their telling me that they were going to discontinue the 08005879089 number and wanted me to use the 08089933004 number instead. Unfortunately the 08089933004 number, as with its predecessor 08089933001 have never connected to BT from my location. The lack of connection became so bad that BT gave me the 08005879089 number and one months refund of subscription, there does however seem to little interest expressed by BT as to how they propose to connect from the end of next week. Disks from Crazy Penguin, the first CD's I bought came from Crazy Penguin, (their prices were that little bit lower than every one else's), these would not work in either my or my son-in-laws computers, I cut my losses and bought from the Linux Emporium. If you're going to be at Syleham tomorrow I have Slackware 8, and Progeny, I'm sure someone can copy them for you. John Seago

Hi Folks Is there any expertise within the group on using real time linux - I'm having some spectacular instant cold boots when I try to run one application. Currently trying a 2.4.8 kernel with the RTAI extensions on a RH7.1 platform. Clutching @ straws ! Regards, Paul.
