This is explained on the page http://www.anglian.lug.org.uk/background/cvs-access.html but I should link to the sablotron site somewhere. Once again: It is not necessary. Indeed, I don't have it installed here.

I know you need to do an exam for a VHF license (got mine soon) but for 802.11 you don't it sits in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band and is license exempt. Not however that Bluetooth, kitchen Microwaves, video senders and lots of other bits of kit live in this band.
