Linux advocacy in The Register.

I don't know how many in here read The Register, but IMO, it's compulsory reading for any professional (or serious) IT people. Anyway, this is a good article on Linux advocacy, and one I found brought me up a bit short in one respect (Too clever? Moi?). Doing it the manual way like this brings up the same errors I was getting last night using the fetchmail I'd just created. My account is trx850.uklinux.net USER trx850 +OK trx850 selected PASS Blahpootle -ERR cucipop: Invalid password or username (check case) I don't need to be old Sherlock to see the password is wrong. It's the one uklinux gave me when I asked them last week (after forgetting it, ha!); maybe they told me wrong, I'll get back to them. LATER This is what UK Linux Support said >I've taken a look through our logs and cannot find any dialin failiurs last dialin was about 10:20 on the 4th. >We've had some "glitches" recently, so I've manually update the your password on the servers. So it can't be the password after all. Well then, I'm stumped. Mark: fetchmail -vvv shows the usual cucipop: Invalid password or username - authorization failure message before quitting. If password isn't wrong, maybe username is some other variation on the possible theme.. Tell you what - this is a jen-being-thick-over-email problem not really a linux one, so I'll shut up now. Thanks for the hints. I'll get there! Jen

fetchmail

Hi All, Look out, I'm in Full Posting Mode today! :-) Thanks to fetchmailconf and Adam's sample .fetchmailrc I have finally got a vague grasp of fetchmail. I got it to go and get mail from my freeserve account nae bother, but am having more difficulty with the new uklinux account. Does anyone have an account with uklinux and also have a fetchmailrc file they could send me a sample of the lines to put in for them? I've tried many flavours of insert but when it gets as far as the server I am turned down on username or password not valid. I'm being dense somewhere. Thanks, jen.

Does anyone know of any attacks which can be made against a machine which only has ports for HTTP and SSH open? Assuming I don't have any silly CGI going on. I'm only considering attacks which give the attacker a foothold. Fx. flooding doesn't count. Thanks, Alexis

Missing Network Card Library?

After sitting confused and bewildered as my free Debian cover disk CD asked an apparently never ending series of questions I have finally managed to successfully load it onto a spare disk to try out in my PC. Being very much a Linux newbie and feeling proud and confident after this mammoth achievement I thought I would try installing a network card by hand so I could start to learn a little more about how Linux is configured and works behind the scenes. I eagerly took my PC case apart and excitedly inserted an ancient SMC-Ultra 16 card, then, looking at my notes, saw they said I should login as root, change into the /lib/modules/"kernel version"/net directory, check the file "smc-ultra.o" exists, then issue the command: insmod ./smc-ultra.o before adding "smc-ultra" to /etc/modules, inserting some entries into /etc/network/interfaces and restarting /etc/init.d/networking. However, when I tried the above insmod command I got four error messages: ./smc-ultra.o: unresolved symbol ei_open ./smc-ultra.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init ./smc-ultra.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt ./smc-ultra.o: unresolved symbol NS8390_int My notes, nor my little Debian text book, do not explain these errors, though flicking through other parts of the book I can see hinted after a similar error message that it may be due to "missing libraries". This would not surprise me as it is my first installation of Debian and it is highly likely that I omitted to install something I should have installed. I therefore have a series of questions, as, if I continue to experiment by trying things out by hand (rather than using any easy graphical tools) I think this may be a common problem I will come across. Am I correct in thinking that these errors are due to a "missing library"? If so then how do I determine the name of the library that is missing? Once I know it's name then how do I know where to look for it / discover what package it is included in so I can install it? Finally, if the program I wanted to install was a bit more obscure than a simple network card driver, so it was not supplied on the installation CD, where would be the best place to search on the internet for "libraries"? Sorry if these questions seem a bit stupid to you guys with experience but I guess you were newbies too yourselves many years ago, so please have patience. Ian.

Hence my previous "mail clients" post, and the insistence that it does mail, and not all the other bells-and-whistles. Although saying that, Mozilla messenger did this as well. I looked in /etc/profile and /etc/bashrc (I think) > but couldn't see anything related. Yes, /etc/profile (or /etc/login for c-shells) is the normal place. You probably won't see a default setting, as if the variable is unset, it defaults to "C", the default (it stands for common, I think) locale. -- MJR
