My Epson stylus Colour 680 works quite spiffy with Linux (CUPS), even though I use the USB connection rather than the parallel port (cos the parallel port on my motherboard's a bit knackered+ have a newish kernel). Great for digital photos- not sure about the double-sided thing though, I have to put the paper in the other way round manually.
Costs about £70, but you might get stung on the ink prices.
