I'd second that... a friend of mine got an old MacII (I think?) for a few quid at a rally..... Linux wouldn't play fair, but we managed to get NetBSD up and running after we persuaded to work! :-)
There's no boot loader though... you had to boot MacOS first.

NetBSD is about the only way to go if you want unix, could be useful to learn MacOS though if you don't know it already....
