Hi all,
just thought you might like to hear of my stupidity! I have just spent 30 minutes saying lots of swear words as my new scanner (USB Epson 640) didn't work, I had gone through the configs a million times etc. and it should all of worked.
Stupid me forgot to check the permissions on /dev/usbscanner as I had to create the device node by hand! a quick chmod 666 /dev/usbscanner and it of course now all works lovely! and yes I am going to change the permissions to something a little more secure in a second.
I also have gimp-print working well with my Epson Photo 700 inkjet printer so I am well chuffed, I now have a linux gfx design workstation!
Anyway does anyone know of any good books on the gimp? I have been toying with the idea of getting 'grokking the gimp' but I am unsure of which books on the gimp are any good and don't want to waste precious money. Adam

I have the Coriolis Press Gimp black book, offical handbook one. It's pretty good, it goes into detail about each function and filter and gives examples of the uses of each one.
Personally I don't like Michael J Hammels' style of writing, so I tend to avoid his Gimp books. I think he talks down to the user and it never seems to be more than a list of what button does what, so proceed with caution on his stuff.
However if you want more of a user guide for tutorials, then I'm not sure what to suggest...

Its always good to admit cock ups, I admit them far too regularly tho.
Latest cock up for me is tacking over 3 weeks to get NT 4 installed on two boxes, in the end I admitted defeat. If only the manager had let me put Linux on, I can do that in 15mins!

Wasn't it a permissions problem with my printer?

What scanning software are you using? does the GIMP have scanning built in?

Don't own them my self but.
"Grokking the gimp" is very good, a person on the list has just ordered it at 25% off so I will see when it arrives how good it really is.
the GIMP pocket guide is in the library ATM.
What ever book you get adam, let me know what one you want and I will sort you the discount.
Thanks

Yeah the setuid bit wasn't set when we set that up, easily missed though as that was a bit of a hack!

http://www.mostang.com/sane and xsane which integrate with the gimp very nicely! What I did wrong to cause the frustration was I purchased a scanner from one vendor over a week ago as it was a half price agfa recon unit, unfortunatly it was broke so I sent it back for a refund and said sod it and got an Epson as they are best supported under linux. As I had half setup the system from the other day I forgot to set the permissions on /dev/usbscanner so although I configured it all correctly in less than 10 mins it took half an hour of swearing trying to figure out how to get the system to give me some debug output. As soon as I got that output I could see the permissions problem!

What books do we get a discount on? I will put it in the FAQ. I just ordered myself a copy of grokking the gimp elsewhere (I forgot about our discounts) but I'm not going to check how much it cost me now as I don't want to kick myself!

Nearly ever technical publisher out there (I don't have The MS press, just yet unfortunalty but I am trying) including O'Rielly, prentice hall, new riders etc...
GTG would be about 26 pound. plus 2.5 postage :o)
