Following adams suggestion of watching "The secret History of hacking" I was intreagued enough to watch, I was amazed that the program was actually quite good, it didn't just cover the basic Haxor prats but covered alot of stuff I didn't know like the Home brew computing club etc...
I was pleasently surprised by this program. What did others think?
Thanks

It was alright, I already knew most of the background etc. although I feel it must of been very enlightening to people who already know some of the background of hacking etc. but not the full history, but I must say the representation of the "hacker" was very lacking. It seemed to infer that hackers used to be good and now they are bad! I felt that the program would of had more credibility (on a personal level) if they made a distinction between people who "hack" and people who "crack"
This kind of representation can prove a little difficult to overcome in social situations. I have told people (in a social setting) that I am a Unix hacker before and they freak out because they think I am stealing their credit card numbers! this program did little to redress the balance only to re-enforce it.
Adam PS another question... should this kind of discussion only take place on the ALug social list? or is it "on topic" enough?

Infer? I think you mean "imply", which may explain any misunderstanding... Infer != imply...

Aah yes, I have just looked at this. I did actually mean infer! albeit that the inference was made from what we (real hackers) would describe as false data or information. I would of said the program implied something but they made it very clear that hackers were once good and are now bad hence (I believe) the inference.
I have just looked them (infer & imply) up in the OED though and it is interesting to note that I probably meant something between infer and imply as I didn't actually know the complete difference between the two (and the several pints of lager I had just drunk also probably didn't help!) but there was some nagging feeling at the time of writing. Also noteworthy is that "over 20% of the citations for infer in the British National Corpex are erroneous for imply." source OED.
Adam PS this is now on alug social only so that ppl don't get upset.
Just a quick note to ask that if anybody cross-posts to the Social list from the general Alug list and/or vice versa please be aware that any response from non-members of the Alug Social list will need to be approved by the moderator(s) before their post is sent to the Social list.
Thanks,
