I'll post this here, since it could be considered spam of the highest order on main :) Since there's a (slim) offchance that luggers will be offline tomorrow, I just thought I'd wish everyone a Merry Christmas in advance. I feel I should apologise for this in advance... I feel I may burst into horrific kitch Christmas silliness at any moment... ..argh, here it comes... 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a peripheral was stirring - not even a mouse. The sockets were probing in the darkness with care for mails about family and regaining one's hair (and ruder mails too, but we don't mention sex - and spam that won't hurt those who shun activeX) The luggers were nestled all snug in their beds - while Eric S Raymond danced in their heads.. (Now you might consider gadgets more fitting, or sheep, still, that's what cheap sherry will do for your sleep.) Quinophex by the fireplace, The worse for the booze had put up his gnomish feet eshoeing his schews iDunno in his Debian hat and peterO in his SuSE every GPL-user settled down for a SnooSE When down in the study, there arose such a clatter I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Shelling into the router that had raised such a fuss I discovered a defacement from St Nicholas It said: "Chimneys are so yesterday, and the squeeze a bit tight, so Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night." ~ Happy Christmas, folks, health and happiness to you all and your families :D -- There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Exciting Norwich Event

Nothing to do with Linux/OSS but certainly technology related and possibly of interest to ALUG'ers, hence on Social list and not Main: The Norwich ID Card Forum will be held on Saturday, 5th November, 10-5pm, in rooms at The United Reform Church(NR3 1AZ). There will be talks and workshops on various aspects of ID cards such as biometrics, RFID, network infrastructure security, governemnt legislation, companies which will profit from ID cards, social issues etc. etc. Speakers will be from No2ID, Liberty, Norwich City Council and various local groups. Double glazing recommendations?

I'd hoped I'd never have to ask this, but can anyone recommend any double glazing people in or around Norwich? I'd really rather use someone on a recommendation than have to risk getting a heavy sales pitch directed at me. (There's a Linux link here; my sensible brain cell has kicked into action and said I can't have a new laptop until I finally get the windows sorted out. A Toshiba Portégé R200 is calling me I think.) Just to balance the last company recommendation, a company warning. BT don't even do the little they say they will. Last September, I finally escaped from BT's shoddy telephone service to a 12-month contract with 'it' http://www.itplc.com/ - they're OK, but probably not the best or cheapest that you can find now. I wrote and told BT exactly why they lost my account (basically, bad customer service habits, combined with only offering "bundled calls" packages so other calls providers are less attractive). I got an amazingly stupid typed reply explaining why BT's brilliant. Not a good answer. Like I'm going to read a sales pitch and thing "yeah, I imagined all those problems moving house, getting my business number, and so on." In April, I had a letter from BT inviting me back with the first headline being "Enjoy low prices on all BT Together call options" - "Together" being the package that I was moved to and quit. I called the number on the sheet, asked to be removed from the "come back" mailing list and was assured it would be done. Today, another letter from BT, now offering a "Special Offer" if I take one of their bundled calls packages. Amazing. The absolute clincher is that the letter finishes with an advert for "BT Privacy"! Not privacy from BT sales letters, I guess. Could these people organise a brewery event? Again called, again assured, and this time asked them to send confirmation in writing. Is it worth taking this further? I'm not sure. In my opinion, anyone staying with BT should have a really good motive. There are many other line renters nationwide now, including phonecoop. Hope your telephone behaves better, -- MJ Ray (slef), K. Norwich "Second Thursday" Social Meeting - The Reindeer - 20:00 Thursday 12 May

Generally meetings start around 8pm and go on till either we all have to go home or we get kicked out of the pub.
